BIO: Cathy Whims is on a quest to offer historically-based, authentic dishes with a sense of place and a passion for local produce. Cathy’s partner, David West and her opened Nostrana in 2005 and it quickly became awarded Best Restaurant of the Year. Nostrana features Italian menus in Southeast Portland and serves classic Italian dishes with seasonal dishes reflecting the personal relationship Cathy Whims has with the local farmers.
Her menu highlights the intensity of natural flavors that are cooked in the wood oven and wood fired grill. Her Italian masterpieces are highly sought after by food enthusiast’s and also features an expansive wine list, fabulous cocktails, handmade pastas, meat and fish dishes, Neapolitan style pizzas and a wide variety of delicate desserts.
Before Cathy Whims opened Nostrana, she was co-owner of Genoa, a prix-fixe Italian restaurant in Portland. Cathy Whims was a student of Marcella and Victor Hazan, and Madeleine Kamman at the highly esteemed School for American Chefs. She has cooked alongside Giancinto Albarello at Genoa at the Antica Trattoria in Barbaresco and Marco Forneris at Osteria La Libera in Alba. Cathy Whims was a finalist in 2009 and 2010 for the James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef Northwest and is available for speaking engagements, hosting and corporate hospitality.
