Celebrity Chefs Spice Things Up at Wine & Food Festival

The bright lights and beautiful beaches of Miami played host to the 2014 South Beach Wine & Food Festival that sizzled from last Thursday through the weekend. The 4-day festival took on a fast-paced, party-like atmosphere that saw Michael Symon and other celebrity chefs play volleyball with Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, Paula Deen ride Robert Irvine like a pony, and the industry’s top celebrity chefs dish out their culinary knowledge and good eats to festival goers.

South-Beach-Wine-and-FoodThe festival, sponsored by Food Network and presented by Food & Wine magazine, began Thursday with a charity volleyball game featuring SI swimsuit models and celebrity chefs that raised over $20,000 for the Armed Forces Foundation. After the game, Michael Symon hosted Moet Hennessy’s The Q event, cooking alongside over 40 of the nation’s top celebrity chefs under tents on the beach, making the perfect dishes to accompany the exquisite cocktails from Moet Hennessy’s menu. Friday began with a celebrity golf tournament held by Celebrity Chef Jose Andres and ended with several special dinners hosted by culinary greats Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert, and Michelle Bernstein. A fan-favorite and Friday’s main event was Rachael Ray’s Burger Bash. Bobby Flay walked away with the Burger Bash title last year, but the Iron Chef’s absence this year allowed Michael Symon to secure his fourth title with his “Fat Doug Burger”, a beef burger decked with pastrami, Havarti cheese and coleslaw.

The annual event is not all libations and tasty food as Saturday morning kicked off with an indoor fitness bike ride with celebrity chef Ingrid Hoffman and others to burn off the excess calories gained from the week’s events. Saturday and Sunday were highlighted by the Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village that hosted a number of cooking demonstrations and grand tastings from a number of celebrity chefs including Trisha Yearwood and Giada de Laurentiis, and exquisite cuisine at more dinner parties with the likes of Chef Emeril Lagasse and Andrew Zimmern. While Paula Deen hosted a show with celebrity chef sons Jamie and Bobby Deen on the main stage at the Village, Robert Irvine joined the set and carried Paula across the stage on his back as she claimed she was back in the saddle of the culinary world. Later that evening The Chicken Coupe event, hosted by Andrew Carmellini, celebrated America’s latest obsession of fried chicken coupled with bottles of bubbly.

The weekend wrapped up Sunday night with the 3rd annual Munchies: People’s Choice Food Awards and the possibility to enjoy some of the finest wines and dines of the year as voted by the public. With hangovers and food comas aplenty left in the wake of Miami’s biggest food and wine festival, the party will continue when the next festival hits the vacation hotspot Riviera Maya in Cancun this March.

Cholula Spicing up with New Celebrity Chef Ad Campaign

hire-ingrid-hoffmanPopular hot sauce brand Cholula is planning to put a little more kick in their 2014 advertisement campaigns when they team up with international celebrity chef, author, and TV personality Ingrid Hoffmann. The Colombian native is the current host of the cooking shows Simply Delicioso on Food Network and the Cooking Channel, and the all Spanish-speaking show Delicioso on Galavision/Univision. Her distinctive cooking style of Latin American flair coupled with entertainment spices up the everyday dish in homes across the world and mixes well with the growing resurgence of the public’s use of hot sauce. Now as an industry leading brand, Cholula hopes a celebrity spokesperson will further expand its reach in the market.

This is the next step in the culinary career of the talented Chef Ingrid whose enthusiasm in the kitchen and impressive knowledge of ethnic flavors make her a great candidate for Cholula. Several other Latin American chefs have already partnered with companies to produce their own line of prepared food and recipes including Marcela Valladolid’s prepared dishes with Safeway and Jose Andres and his various products featured in Whole Foods. Nowadays celebrity chefs are finding any way to further their own personal brand through different product channels as evident by the incredible market reach that celebrity chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay have perfected over their years in the industry. Ironically enough, Guy Fieri has a new campaign with Rolaids that is currently circulating through several different marketing channels. The fact that the cooking industry can have simultaneous campaigns for hot sauce and digestion relief is a prime example of the wide spectrum of marketing opportunities for celebrity chefs that are associated with the culinary arts. Cholula is prepared to utilize Ingrid’s culinary genius to develop exclusive Cholula recipes involving all the Cholula flavors as well as demonstrate the uses of the different hot sauces in a series of webisodes published on their company website. Ingrid will also help launch a new digital campaign in which she will provide cooking advice called “Chica Tips” to support the brand with posts on all of their social media channels.

With this deal, Ingrid isn’t getting her own line of signature prepared food, products or cookware like we’ve seen in the case of other popular chefs like Aaron Sanchez, Aaron McCargo, Jr., or Giada De Laurentiis. However what makes this partnership in the kitchen a good recipe for Ingrid is the fact that Cholula’s popularity will help to familiarize her name to all its consumers and she will be able to build an even larger fan base of home cooks. This Cholula partnership also comes after she recently partnered with Univision, Home Shopping Network, and a top cook and tableware manufacturer Gibson to create her own signature line called Simplemente Delicioso. It seems the world will be seeing a lot more of Ingrid Hoffmann in 2014 and her partnerships with industry leading companies is the next step in becoming one of the world’s most recognized celebrity chefs.

hire-guy-fieriSince Fieri’s first Food Network reality show in 2006, he has entertained thousands of people from a variety of backgrounds. Chef Fieri is the kind of cook you can relate to, and people appreciate his humor and laid-back style on camera. And if you’re a guy who likes to watch his shows, you’re not alone; his shows have attracted far more male viewers than any other series on Food Network. Fieri definitely knows how to cook, and he attributes it to being raised by tofu-eating California hippies. Since winning the second season of The Next Food Network Star, Guy has starred in various shows, including Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, Ultimate Recipe Showdown, and Minute to Win It. In addition to his cascade of television appearances, Fieri has written three books; the first two were New York Times bestsellers for over 12 weeks. Oh wait, I forgot to add that this culinary genius co-owns five restaurants in California.

Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri is one of a plethora of celebrity chefs involved in cooking competition shows. Chefs Emeril Lagasse and Tom Colicchio appear regularly on Bravo’s popular cooking competition series, Top Chef. In addition to these two cooking stars, Celebrity Chefs Geoffrey Zakarian and Scott Conant will continue to appear in Season 19 of Food Network’s hit show Chopped.  And who can forget Chef Gordon Ramsay yelling “This is RAW!” on Hell’s Kitchen? Needless to say, there are a lot of cooking competition shows, and people really dig them. They’re very entertaining and can teach you a thing or two about cooking. Whether you’re a professional cook, a college kid who regularly eats Chef Boyardee and Ramen Noodles, or somewhere in between, everyone can be entertained and learn something by watching these culinary competitions. And if you are living in a household with parents like Fieri’s, tuning into the next season of Guy’s Grocery Games could be life-changing. Namely, it could save you from eating tofu for the rest of your life. You’re welcome in advance.

Many celebrity chefs have teased the taste buds of American viewers during the Top Chef competitions and gone on to become industry pioneers and icons.  Top Chef Judge Wolfgang Puck’s favorite and fan-favorite alum Kevin Gillespie has opened his own restaurant Gunshow in Atlanta since his appearance on season 6 of the show. Fellow Atlanta restaurant owner and executive chef Richard Blais also found success after competing on season 4 of Top Chef and season 8 of the All-Stars edition.

It has yet to be announced who will be competing in the show and whether these past culinary masterminds or others like Kristen Kish, Tiffani Faison, and Hugh Acheson will make an encore appearance to showcase their kitchen expertise. What also remains unannounced is which celebrity chef judges will weigh in with their culinary critiques. Tom Colicchio, Emeril Lagasse, and Gail Simmons currently preside over the competitions and appoint the crown of Top Chef. In the past the show has seen the likes of chef and TV personalities Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert lend a hand in judging and some fans could be holding out hope they may make a surprise return in Top Chef’s newest main course for TV. What is certain is that old rivalries will surely be revived and new ones will form as the cheftestants battle their way to the grand prize and title of ultimate Top Chef.
