Iron Chef America’s Fate

Is Iron Chef America on the verge of getting chopped?

hire-iron-chefsAllez Cuisine! Alakazam? After a 9 year run of heroic culinary displays it is rumored that Food Network is doing away with the popular cooking competition series Iron Chef America. The network has only aired 2 new episodes this year and are refusing to let on more about the future of the show. Iron Chef America has become like the Olympics of the culinary world, only broadcast one hour at a time and pitting some of the world’s most brilliant celebrity chefs against each other in a true battle royal of gastronomic proportions. Instead of Bob Costas narrating the action, Alton Brown and his trusty sidekick Kevin Brauch work the floor and helped narrate viewers through the preparations being done by the chefs and their on-hand staff.

Some of today’s most recognizable celebrity chefs and TV personalities have cushioned their careers by becoming Iron Chefs and competing on the show including Michael Symon, Mario Batali, Masaharu Morimoto and Jose Garces. Other well-known chefs have also had their shot at challenging the Iron Chefs on the show with superb performances by the likes of Ming Tsai, Todd English, Michelle Bernstein and Richard Blais. Could it be that Food Network has simply diluted the excitement of ICA with their cornucopia of other competition series? Maybe, but there are plenty of dramatic moments from seasons past that render this show a true food TV gem. Who could forget Bobby Flay’s slew of incredible dishes and competition-leading 43-16 record in the Kitchen Stadium, or the offal cooking chef Chris Cosentino and his wacky yet surprisingly delectable ingredients of squab brains and talons. Wolfgang Puck did it the right way, he one and done’d the whole shindig. He won the only Iron Chef America competition he cooked in, defeating Masaharu in the very first mini-series of the show before it fully evolved into what it is today. Today Wolfgang has over 23 fine dining restaurants around the world and is a true international celebrity chef sensation.

Geoffrey Zakarian is a familiar face from Food Network’s hit series Chopped where he judges the dishes of amateur chefs with help from the likes of Scott Conant, Chris Santos, and Marcus Samuelsson. His tenure as an Iron Chef on the show since 2010 has been a welcomed addition to the competition. Alex Guarnaschelli went from taking on Cat Cora in an Iron Chef America challenge to becoming part of Zakarian’s prep team and eventually earning the title of Iron Chef herself by defeating Amanda Freitag in season 5 of The Nest Iron Chef. Still others have gotten into the action and gained notoriety from the show including Marc Forgione, Robert Irvine, and Angelo Sosa who appeared on the most recent episode in March.

The one leg-up this show still has on all the new competition series is the marquee names. It’s a way different viewing experience for the audience and the end result when two industry leading chefs are going at it instead of two up and coming amateur chefs. The problem however is that maybe audiences are connecting better with the amateurs because they feel like they could achieve the same level of kitchen mastery in their own kitchens instead of only watching in awe while the pros do it. Whether the network decides to cancel the show or not, Iron Chef America is a staple for a network that has rose to become a TV powerhouse in the last decade and the heated battles in the Kitchen Stadium will live on through YouTube and syndication.

Top Chef Alumni Set Sail

Top Chef Alums Set Sail on Celebrity Cruise Lines

What’s better than taking to the open water on a weeklong summer cruise? Taking to the open water on a weeklong summer cruise with some of today’s top celebrity chefs providing the eats, that’s what. Starting this July, contestants from the hunger-inducing Bravo network reality series Top Chef will be hitting the high seas from different ports around the world. The Top Chefs at Sea celebrity cruise lines aim to provide fans a chance to mingle with their favorite cooks, enjoy the product of their culinary skills and even watch them compete in Quickfire challenges just like on the show. However, this time the chefs can relax and enjoy the prep and bake without the critiquing eye of Top Chef Judges Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons. Private cooking lessons will be offered for those interested in a more intimate experience and dishes prepared by the Top Chef contestants will be readily available in the ship’s main restaurant.

hire-top-chefsThe 1st of the 4 celebrity cruises is the Celebrity Summit which sets out from Cape Liberty, New Jersey for Bermuda on July 27th. Aboard, Spike Mendelsohn, Ash Fulk, and Angelo Sosa will dazzle patrons with their exquisite dishes and hopefully equally impressive sea-legs. As a cheftestant on Top Chef: Season 4 Chicago, Mendelsohn won over the judges with his passion for American comfort food and finished fifth overall in the season. After winning quite a few of the Quickfire challenges, Mendelsohn was asked to make a return appearance on Top Chef: All Stars. His TV appearances coupled with the opening of a third restaurant on Capitol Hill, Bearnaise, have earned Mendelsohn quite the reputation. Also on board the Summit, Top Chef: Season 6 runner-up, Ash Fulk, will awe fellow voyagers with his creative recipes and innovative style. Entirely self-taught, Fulk has honed his skills as Chef de Cuisine for Hill Country Barbecue Market and Trestle on Tenth.

The Celebrity Solstice departs from Seattle, Washington on August 15th, headed for Alaska. On board, Paul Qui, Tiffani Faison, Brooke Williamson and Nina Compton will have to make sure to bring their insulated chef hats to combat the bitter Alaskan chill. An expert in French and Japanese cuisine and executive chef at Uchiko, Paul Qui captivated the audience and judges of Top Chef: Season 9, winning the season title. Qui employs a sense of modernism in his cooking in that he revamps traditional recipes and doesn’t adhere to typical ingredient combinations. One of the few cheftestants with prior cruise experience, Tiffani Faison was the Top Chef: Season 1 runner-up and a cheftestant on Top Chef: All-Stars. While not on Top Chef, Faison has been the personal chef to Will Smith and opened a restaurant of her own, Sweet Cheeks Q. With a fascinating blend of fine dining and good old fashioned barbecue, Faison’s culinary creations will surely keep patrons warm during the cold Alaskan nights.

The third leg of Top Chef at Sea, the Celebrity Infinity, sets sail toward France and Iberia from England on September 19th. This special voyage will feature appearances by Chris Crary and Kristen Kish, winner of Top Chef: Season 10. Kish’s contemporary blend of French and Italian cuisines will leave guests feeling positively buoyant as they sail across the pond. To wrap up the Top Chef at Sea event, the Celebrity Reflection sets sail from Miami, Florida on November 15th with Hosea Rosenberg, Casey Thompson, Tiffany Derry and Shirley Chung on board, headed towards the Eastern Caribbean.

There are several other cruise lines utilizing this same tactic of highlighting their cruises with celebrity chefs including a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship that featured Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian and the Cake Boss Buddy Valastro. Other chefs such as Guy Fieri and Nobu Matsuhisa have taken a slightly different route to the big oceans by instead simply opening signature restaurants on certain cruise ships. As for the Top Chef cheftestants, adding time spent as a celebrity cruise ship chef and part time sailor to the resume certainly doesn’t hurt.

Top 10 Trending Chefs April 28 2014

Why are they trending you might ask?

Let the Celebrity Chef Network Experts break down Who’s Hot and find out why these Headliners are making Headlines.

hire-cat-coraCat Cora: Food Network’s newest hit TV series America’s Best Cook closely mimics ABC’s popular competition series The Voice and will feature contestants from across the country looking to earn the title of the country’s best cook. The well-known Iron Chef Cat Cora was cast along with 3 other Food Network personalities including Alex Guarnaschelli, Michael Symon and Tyler Florence as the 4 team mentors and familiar Chopped host Ted Allen is handling the hosting duties. Cat will head the South team in the competition divided by regions and although the mentors are all old friends the kitchen trash talk has already begun.

hire-geoffrey-zakarianGeoffrey Zakarian: Geoffrey has come a long way from out-cooking Elizabeth Faulkner to win Food Network’s Next Iron Chef in 2011. The now renowned restaurateur frequently joins the likes of Aaron Sanchez, Amanda Freitag, Chris Santos and other culinary masters to judge the hit series Chopped and is set to make a mid-July visit to the Hamptons to host the 4th annual Dan’s Taste of Two Forks. The ritzy event habitually boasts high profile guests and celebrity chefs including having previously been hosted by Marcus Samuelsson and Gordon Ramsay.

hire-katie-leeKatie Lee: The Hamptons saved room for 2! Katie is another talented celebrity chef who lucked out with a free Hamptons trip to co-host Dan’s Taste of Two Forks summer soiree in Bridgehampton. Katie won over many fans after becoming a co-host and sharing new recipes alongside Zakarian, Sunny Anderson, Marcela Valladolid and Jeff Mauro on Food Network’s series The Kitchen. Together, Geoffrey and Katie will be the first celebrity chefs to co-host the event and are sure to be quite the dynamic duo given their previous work together.

hire-buddy-valastroBuddy Valastro: In today’s culinary world there is only one Cake Boss and that man is Buddy Valastro. If you have yet to see what this guy can do in the comfort of his family bakery Carlo’s it would be well worth watching the syndicated episodes of his TLC TV series Cake Boss and subsequent spin-offs that chronicle some of the best works of edible art he has made to date. The NJ native has expanded his baking empire to now include a spot in The Venetian right on the Vegas strip across from his restaurant Buddy V’s. His TV success should help the bakery fair well despite being housed under the same roof as signature restaurants from industry giants Mario Batali, Thomas Keller and Wolfgang Puck.

hire-spike-mendelsohnSpike Mendelsohn: Celebrity chefs get the opportunity to wine and dine a slew of famous entertainers, world leaders and celebrities, but how would you like to be the owner of the D.C. restaurant the President and First Lady like often like to frequent? Top Chef alum Spike Mendelsohn can claim that title and his Good Stuff Eatery has become one of the nation’s capitol’s favorite eateries with locations on Capitol Hill and in Georgetown. Hopefully his staff can hold down the business when Spike sets sail to Bermuda aboard the Celebrity Summit with fellow celebrity chefs Angelo Sosa and Ash Fulk this July as a part of the Top Chef at Sea Celebrity Cruise vacations.

Carla Hall: Fans of celebrity chef Carla Hall became accustomed to her ideas of cooking with love during her run as a finalist and fan-favorite on Bravo’s cooking competition series Top Chef. She now shares her recipes with love alongside chefs Michael Symon, Daphne Oz, and Mario Batali on the ABC cooking talk show The Chew. On April 1st, she bundled together a number of home recipes and seasoning strategies to create her newest cookbook titled Carla’s Comfort Foods: Favorite Dishes from Around the World.

Kristen Kish: I bet if you were to ask any of the Food Network’s Top Chef judges at the time Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi, Gail Simmons or Hugh Acheson if they had ever seen a series like season 10 they would be quick to say no. Kristen battled her way out of over 5 Last Chance Kitchens to reach the finale and win the title of Top Chef in 2012. Now the show’s most resilient chef will feel no pressure when she boards the Celebrity Reflection vessel headed towards some of Europe’s most popular hotspots. Kristen is part of a multi-cruise opportunity for fans of the show to rub shoulders and finally sample the work of Top Chef’s most popular alumni while enjoying life at sea.

Robert Irvine: It would be hard to find a better man’s man in the biz fit to preside over Long Island’s most popular grill-off than Robert Irvine. Restaurant Impossible’s brawny host will bring the perfect culinary expertise with gusto at the 2nd annual Grillhampton grill-off kicking of the 2-day foodie event in Bridgehampton. The exciting competition will also feature a judging panel of equally familiar celebrity chefs including Chopped regular Marc Murphy, and NYC butcher Pat LaFrieda.

Giada De Laurentiis: What’s the next logical step in the career of a TV food star? Why a restaurant of course, and for Giada why not one in one of the most tourist heavy cities in the States. Her first career restaurant GIADA is going through the final stages before its launch in June and its location in the Las Vegas strip’s newest boutique hotel The Cromwell should help rival the already popular celebrity chef restaurants down the road from Bobby Flay, Alain Ducasse, and Emeril Lagasse. The restaurant’s contemporary design and retractable windows that draw back to reveal beautiful views of Caesars Palace and the Bellagio fountains will only serve to compliment her delectable Italian cuisine.

Alton Brown: Alton Brown has assumed the role as the industry’s MacGyver in the kitchen with a million tips to bettering every aspect of your kitchen, and even we have to admit his latest kitchen hack is somewhat of a stroke of genius. Hate how the condiment bottles all get terribly aggravating to squirt during their final days of life in the fridge? Alton suggests simply converting an unused egg carton into a make-shift condiment rack as the egg slots work perfect to hold the form of an upside down bottle. Problem solved!

Chefs Host Hamptons Bash

hire-marcus-samuelssonLife is good in the Hamptons. Even if you’re simply the business behind the mainstay paper dropped on everyone’s doorstep each morning. Dan’s Paper of Manhattan Media will again donate its namesake to the 4th annual Dan’s Taste of Two Forks Festival celebrating culinary genius from the north and south forks of Long Island. Celebrity Chefs, sponsors and foodies from across the U.S. are set to converge on Sayre Park from July 11-12 for a weekend of taste-bud overload packed full of fine wines and delicious eats. In true East End fashion, the overwhelmingly popular summer soiree has boasted some of the cooking industry’s top names to host its weekend festivities from Marcus Samuelsson in 2011 to Jean Georges Vongerichten and most recently Bobby Flay in 2013. The star power will double this year to feature 2 popular celebrity chef personalities Geoffrey Zakarian and Katie Lee as co-hosts of the weekend’s revelries. The hosts will be joined by Restaurant Impossible’s Robert Irvine who will be in charge of the second annual Grillhampton grill-off set to kick off the weekend Friday night.

Irvine’s fan-favorite grill competition pits Manhattan’s finest grill masters against the Hamptons’ stout repertoire of food preparers. Team Hamptons is looking to defend their title this year and the consistently sold out event is sure to deliver the perfect combination of relaxation, exciting competition, and some of the best food creations you’ll ever try in your life. On hand to judge the event will be a panel of food experts and familiar faces including James Beard Award winning chef David Burke, Food network personality Marc Murphy, and NYC’s premiere butcher Pat LaFrieda. Saturday will be spent with Zakarian and Lee amidst the tents of the Taste of Two Forks event where over 40 restaurants and other vendors will set up kitchen along with Long Island’s most talented chefs to provide festival goers with an array of tasty bites and pours.

Chef Zakarian has put together an incredible resume as a restaurateur and regularly appears as a guest judge on Chopped alongside a handful of other great culinary minds including Scott Conant, Alexandra Guarnaschelli, Amanda Freitag and Aaron Sanchez. He now acts as a co-host with Katie Lee on Food Network’s The Kitchen where the two join fellow cooking industry leaders Jeff Mauro, Marcela Valladolid and Sunny Anderson to whip up tasty recipes for viewers. Katie Lee has found success in the industry after becoming a well-liked cookbook author and food critic whose ex-husband just so happens to be American music icon Billy Joel. Katie publishes a culinary and lifestyle column in the Hamptons magazine distributed weekly to residents so she will likely receive a very warm reception when she first hits the stage in July. This exciting weekend event provides guests the opportunity to rub shoulders with both celebrity chefs and some of the areas greatest culinary minds while kicking back and enjoying the best food and wine Long Island has to offer. This weekend in July is definitely a must for any foodie traveler and quite an enjoyable weekend as well for the celebrity chefs booked to host the event!

HSN Celebrity Chefs

hire-celebrity-chefLosing an hour to Daylight Savings each spring is never easy but this year it wasn’t so bad if you tuned in to HSN on Sunday to watch tantalizing live cooking demonstrations performed by today’s top culinary masters. The HSN Cooks event booked a list of highly regarded celebrity chefs in the industry to create a 24-hour live demonstration and recipe sharing spectacular.

This is the first time HSN has brought together some of its partnered celebrity chefs on one stage to provide cooking demonstrations  in front of a live audience of HSN credit card customers. Celebrated restaurateur and chef Ming Tsai and the chef behind Taco Bell’s newest Cantina Bell Menu chef Lorena Garcia were paired together for a segment highlighting their newest recipes and tips, as well as their own lines of cookware that were prominently displayed throughout the broadcast. Also adding to the fun and exciting atmosphere were Top Chef Master’s Curtis Stone and Zagat’s “Hostess with the Mostess” Donatella Arpaia enjoying sharing their favorite recipes and kitchen tricks. A nice addition to the set was the dedicated mother Jessica Seinfeld and her novel cookbooks of tricks to get her family to eat healthier without even realizing it, utilizing vegetable purees and alternatives to processed sugars and flour. Food and Wine magazine’s 2004 Best New Chef Scott Conant now usually flashes his culinary knowledge as a judge alongside Marcus Samuelsson and Geoffrey Zakarian on many Food Network broadcasts and as the host of 24-Hour Restaurant Battle.  Scott was on hand to share recipes from his cookbooks including his latest The Scarpetta Cookbook. The bright lights of the HSN stage Sunday night surely didn’t bother celebrity chef Kelsey Nixon as the former Food Network and Martha Stewart Living intern is a pro now after landing her own show Kelsey’s Essentials on the Cooking Channel in 2010.

Noticeably absent from the broadcast and crucial personal branding opportunity were some of the network’s other prime celebrity chefs including Ingrid Hoffman and Wolfgang Puck whose customer-praised lines of cookware, bakeware and cookbooks are prominently featured on HSN online. This cooking extravaganza also comes after the heralded Chef Emeril Lagasse recently left the network to continue his on-air career on QVC. A lot of Emeril’s newest endeavors can be attributed to essentially signing over his soul and life’s work to Martha Stewart and her Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia company which has proved to be mutually beneficial for both big names in the industry.
